James Watson, director of the Human Genome Research Center at the National Institutes of Health, said last week that scientists are at least five years away from embarking on a special project to sequence the human genome. The Nobel Laureate claimed that the decision to postpone the implementation of a complete sequential research project was based primarily on cost considerations. While significant progress has been made in automated flow cytometry, the cost of this technology still needs to be further reduced; many scientists believe that this cost must be reduced to about 50 cents per base pair to allow the human body Genome research projects are economically viable. Watson also changed the statement he testified at the U.S. Congress last year. At the time, he claimed that only those countries that financed the Human Genome Sequencing Project had the right to share the research findings of the project.
