The United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) is now embarking on a CO 2 Lidar for two new helicopters developed by the U.S. Army, promising to be the ideal multipurpose LIDAR. According to the Center's electro-optical systems division, the new silo will perform the mission of ground handling with the following features: topography following / topography avoidance, obstacle elimination, Doppler navigation and hovering, precision search and weapon throwing. At present, the exploration and research on the “flight laboratory” equipment has been done, and the principle verification has been made and this research is being advanced to the pre-development stage. The flight laboratory used the 500-pound laser obstacle and terrain avoidance alert system (LOTA-WS) developed by the UTRC Center and successfully flew on the Sikorsky CH-53 helicopter in 1975-76. The new silos will be built outside of LOTAWS CO_2
