A research team at the University of Virginia in the United States has reformed a technique that for the first time elucidated the clear internal structure of human type 2 adenovirus. This virus is one of many viruses that cause a cold. The technique used by Jay Brown et al., Known as “ion-etching”, removes the capsid portion of the virus (viral coat protein), exposes the internal structure of the virus and performs electron microscopy. To complete the study, the team used argon ion beams. With proper energy acceleration, the argon ion opens the capsid’s chemical bond and penetrates to a depth of 50-150 Angstroms (?). When enough chemical bonds are turned on, incoming argon ions can dislodge small peptides on the surface of the virus. In this way, the virus can gradually be exposed internally. In an article by J Virol, the group said that human adenovirus type 2 has 12 large globular
