苏童和威廉·福克纳在小说创作中都采用了颓败型家族叙事模式,如苏童的《妻妾成群》《米》和《罂粟之家》以及福克纳的《喧哗与骚动》《押沙龙,押沙龙!》《去吧,摩西》,这让他们的小说创作从这个角度有了可比性。不过两位作家在进行家族历史叙事过程中也表现出了很大差异性,主要体现在他们对家族灵魂人物,也就是男权社会中的“家长”的刻画以及对家族衰败根源的认识上。而这些创作差异的出现与两位作家的家庭出身和社会时代背景有着密不可分的关系。
