The Application of Film Material in High School English Teaching by Multimedia

  Abstract:With the advanced multimedia network technologies graduallyapplied in the field of teaching,the film material,as an effective means in helping teaching,is introduced by more and more teachers into high school English classes.As we all know,the film material hascertainly played a positive role in cultivating students’social skills and meeting the requirements of quality education. However,there are still some problems in the practical application.According to these problems,the autho puts forward some suggestions to improve the efficiency of the class.

  Information technology and its application in the field of education are on the quick development way.Nowadays it is common for teachers to use film material by multimedia in high school English teaching.The study is intended to see how we can use film material properly in high school English teaching by multimedia,which can help to enhance students’communicative competence and performance in general.
  The thesis consists of four parts.First there is an introduction to thestudy.The second part describes the problems in high school Englishteaching.Next part proposes suggestions on the basis of the existing problems presented before and the last part offers a conclusion.
  1 Problems in High School English Teaching by Using Film Material
  There are some main problems existing in the middle school computer education,such as inappropriate selection of film material,incompetence of teachers’multimedia skills and inadequacy of interaction between teachers and students(Zhu,2001).
  1.1 Inappropriate Selection of Film Materials
  Film material in high school English teaching is always praised for its exclusive advantages.However,the collection of the appropriate film material is not easy.In the practical usage of film material,sometimes the teachers do not take the students’competence and needs into account.Some film materials are not in line with the theme of textbook and some complicated plots and quite a few puzzling colloquial expressions are not suitable for students.Some films are full of sex,violence and profanities,drawing students more to the shock nature of the senses rather than the speech.These inappropriate film materials always waste time in English class.
  1.2 Incompetence of Teachers’ Multimedia Skills
  Using film material by multimedia can provide powerful assistance inteaching process to promote learning,but how to use the auxiliary teaching method correctly also requires exploration and consideration. Some teachers cannot use software to capture film material and pick out relevant clips,sentences,or even words which can be used in English teaching and just use the download film material without editing and processing by themselves.   1.3 Inadequacy of Interaction between Teachers and Students
  In the application of film material in high school English classroom,teachers should try to provide students enough interactive space. However,in the practical application,the over reliance on the multimedia will reduce the time for the communication between the teacher and students,and thus students may feel less concerned,which may discourage the students.
  2 Application of Using Film Material in High School English Teaching
  In the practical application of film material in high school English class,it is becoming apparent that things have not developed as what has been expected and some specific problems do exist. According tosome principles and the previous studies at home and abroad,some suggestions are proposed which will help improve the efficiency of film material in high school English teaching.
  2.1 Pre-class
  In the preparation stage,teachers need to make an analysis of the learner variables,and make an evaluation on the teaching objectives and text contents. This stage serves as a fundamental part of a successful classroom teaching.
  2.1.1 Selection of appropriate film material.
  In selecting film material,we focus on its theme,content,language and length. We should integrate the film with the theme of textbook. Some film materials are in line with the theme of textbook,but they have complicated plots and many puzzling colloquial expressions. It isalmost impossible for students to understand on one viewing in a short period time. Good choice might me modern romantic comedies,less-violent action movies and serious social-issue movies with relativelysimple plots. Apart from that,the speech speed should be moderate and students can understand easily.
  2.1.2 Improvement of teachers’ computer application ability.
  Teachers should use some software to make or process their own teaching materials. Before the class,in processing the video material,theSuperhero player and FormatFactory are recommended to use to makepersonalized edition. In addition,teachers need to be familiar with the functions and the characteristics of the digital projectors and computers.
  2.2 In-class
  In the application of film material in English class,teachers should combine the traditional teaching method and multimedia method. Also,they should pay more attention on interaction between students and teachers.
  2.2.1 The combination of the multimedia method and the traditional teaching method   Although using film material in high school English teaching is proved to be superior to traditional teaching mode by empirical experiences,we should not abandon the latter one totally for it has so many merits. For example,teachers’ language and handwriting on the blackboard have been approved to have great positive influence on the students’ understanding (Na,2008). So we should integrate the advantages of film material with the traditional teaching methods.
  2.2.2 Emphasis on communication in teaching process.
  Personal teaching style and specific educational needs will largely determine the class organization. When students get accustomed to teaching approaches,they will lose the curiosity or expectation. What teachers need to do is to arouse students’interest and lead them to themysterious knowledge world.So teachers should design different activities during the class. For example,discussion in groups or in pairsabout the film clip can be used as a way to demonstrate their communication,
  3 Conclusion
  To sum up,the rapid development of multimedia technology and applications of film material not only facilitates the process of learning English for students but also assert a new challenge to the teachers. Teachers need to explore continuously and try to be competent inusing several of teaching methods according to the characteristics of teaching contents so as to promote learning and achieve the best teaching effect.
