Staphylococcus aureus produces a mucilaginous inhibitory factor against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with little effect on its growth. This inhibitor was not found in the broth but was extracted from solid agar. In addition to inhibiting many Gram-positive bacteria, this inhibitor inhibits Gram-negative bacteria moderately.
