截止目前,多数同志都将领导学的研究分为经验研究(或应用研究)和理论研究两种类型。但是,仔细考察便可发现,这种划分方法值得商榷。它最突出的缺点表现在混同了经验研究与应用研究这两种层次不同的研究,事实上,现代领导学是由三种不同层次的研究类型即经验研究、理论研究和应用研究所组成的完整体系。此三种研究各具特色,并各有其相应的特殊功能。经验研究是最初的、也是最简单、层次最低的研究类型,它同研究对象的联系是直接的,其主要目标在于对现实的、具体的领导活动和领导现象进行调查、归纳与概括,为理论研究提供丰富而翔实的“素材”,主要解决“是什么”的问题。理论研究则以经验研究
