南朝宋国前废帝刘子业,是刘骏的长子。生于公元449年,卒于公元465年,终年16岁,在位一年半(464年5月—465年11月)。大明八年(464年)五月二十三日,刘骏因病去世,刘子业继位。七月初九,刘子业将孝武帝安葬在景宁陵,庙号世祖。七月十三日,刘子业尊祖母为太皇太后,尊母亲王氏为皇太后。刚刚“上任”的刘子业,因为年少,对一些大事件还不清楚,所以他在观望。等到了七月十八日,他开始显示出“天才”:
