The Journal of Hu Shi Studying in Japan and the Diary of Wu Mi (1917-1924) are two typical representatives of the diary of overseas students studying in the United States in the early 20th century. The former constructed a “progressive” civilized nation image, while the latter constructed a “fallen” racist United States image. The widely differing American images of Hu Shi and Wu Mi are closely related to their cultural mentality. Both of them reflect the typical mentality of the students of the United States in the early 20th century who were obsessed by “different ” or “different ”.
