Tantalum - the 49th most widely distributed element on Earth, is often produced as a by-product of tin smelting. Tantalum can also be extracted from the concentrate by sodium reduction or molten salt electrolysis. Tantalum carbide is carbonized by Ta 2 O 5 or tantalum hydride. Methods such as sintering, arc melting and electron beam melting can be used to refine and purify crude tantalum. The unique properties of tantalum make it suitable for many applications, including capacitors, chemical equipment, carbide tools, and various cemented carbides. Tantalum consumption in the capacitor market is expected to increase due to the need for electronic equipment.
