2009年6月1日,美国通用汽车公司向法庭正式申请破产保护。美国“汽车城”底特律在汽车业大幅衰退的情况下,宛如一片风中的秋叶,飘摇不定。拥有百年历史的通用汽车近80年来一直占据着全球汽车行业“老大”的地位。通用汽车成立于1908年9月。100年来,通用先后联合或兼并了别克、凯迪拉克、雪佛兰、庞蒂亚克等公司,并拥有铃木、五十铃和斯巴鲁的股份,形成了丰富的产品线。自1927年以来,通用汽车长期是全世界最大的汽车公司。然而,从2005年开始,通用汽车几乎一直在亏损。2008年,日本丰田汽车超越通用成为世界第一大汽车制造商。
