华侨是中华民族一个重要的支脉。据国民党侨务委员会1940年的统计,抗战前夕,在世界各地的华侨总人数约有1140万。随着日本帝国主义加紧对中国的侵略,他们虽身处海外,但时刻关注着民族的命运、祖国的生死存亡。“九一八”事变后,他们纷纷成立救亡团体,在整个抗日战争期间,华侨在海外建立的救亡团体多达数千余个。抗战的枪声,警醒了每一位有良知的中华儿女。海外华侨在“有钱出钱,有力出力”的号召下,积极募捐款项,支援抗战,“富商巨贾,既不吝金钱,小贩劳工,亦尽倾血汗”
