回想上个世纪末,人类基因组计划完成之时,我们就为人类伟大智慧而感到骄傲。如今,十几年过去了,这棵智慧树不断开枝散叶,散发着它独特的芳香。在基因组计划完成之后,出现了各种组学(omics)研究,即转录组学、蛋白组学和代谢组学。而代谢组学在短暂的十年内迅速发展,代谢组学的出现标示着人类代谢研究迎来了新的辉煌时期。1999年,Nicholson教授首次提出了代谢组学的概念:
Looking back at the end of the last century, when the Human Genome Project was completed, we were proud of the great wisdom of mankind. Today, a dozen years have passed, and this tree of knowledge has been constantly opening branches and leaves, exuding its unique aroma.
