Twelve papers included in this book are refreshing from the results of the two academic seminars sponsored by the Southeast Asian Institute of Great Britain in the early 1980s. These essays have conducted a selective discussion of the interrelations between trade and government in some important parts of Southeast Asia from the ancient to the late 19th century. However, the vast majority of papers in the book deal with what happened after 1400, when rapid trade growth limited the changes in traditional power in the area. Only one article in the book about Ayutthaya examines the non-Malayan continent of Southeast Asia.
