本文在梳理国际上有关印欧人起源问题学术研究史的基础上,重点讨论了语言学与考古学在本领域的研究进展与发展趋势,认为除了传统的历史学、语言学、民族学(人类学)外,遗传学、冶金学、纺织学、气候学等自然科学手段和方法的引入特别引人注目,跨学科研究成为本阶段的一个显著特点,并使本领域的研究日益呈现出多学科整合的趋势。同时必须指出将吐火罗、月氏、塞种和乌孙等早期东方印欧人的历史活动,纳入到原始印欧人群起源及其在欧亚大陆发展的大背景中,并作为一个整体予以考察。这样不仅能够充分认识其在原始印欧人群中的地位及其与其他印欧人之间的关系,探索他们东向发展的原因,而且也可以较为准确地把握中国西部早期印欧文明遗存的内涵与实质,从而对早期印欧文明在东西方文化交流史中的地位与作用作出科学的评价。
