Mr. Meng Min-sheng, a Hong Kong photographer, is now nine years old. His photographs began in the 1950s. Apart from salons and pioneer photography, most of them were recorded photographs of Hong Kong’s social life, especially those of ordinary working people. Hong Kong farmers, fishermen, dockers, workshops, factory workers, social activities, trams, markets, folk customs, the middle class, the Hong Kong-Kowloon Workers’ Movement, the changes in Hong Kong’s construction and so on. The slogan of Hong Kong’s group of left photographers is “using photography to reflect the lower classes.” Meng Min-sheng has taken an active part in the activities of these groups. The social conditions in Hong Kong and the lives of ordinary people constitute a large part of his content. Such records are plain, conscientious, continuous and rarely utilitarian because they can not earn a living by photographing these pictures and rarely have been published in Hong Kong. He and their photographic activities are considered “to a large extent, the outpouring of patriotism and the call for idealism for the welfare of the working people,” as the so-called “leftists.” As the little-known Mr. Meng Min-sheng, his image has just been unveiled. We can only say that in the case of documentary photography, his achievements are enough to disdain the latecomers of the 1980s. Chinese photography history will not be able to ignore such characters.
