戏曲角色是现实社会人物程式化的产物,无疑是一种“有意味的形式”,那么它蕴含着何种文化内涵呢?我认为,由表及里,戏曲角色蕴含着三种文化内涵,即角色是人物社会身份的表征,角色是人物道德品质的表征,角色是人物性格气质的表征。以上三种文化内涵,在不同时代的同一角色之中,或者在同一时代的不同角色之间,构成一种错综交融的状态。但总体看来,却呈现出有迹可循的历史变迁轨迹。王国维的《古剧脚色考·余说一》概括道:
