“Haitian” warship is a main cruiser of the Qing navy after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894. In April 1904, unfortunately, the ship was damaged at the sea surface of Dingxing Island and became the largest warship that the Chinese navy sank in an accident in modern times. Shortly after the defeat of Jiawuhai by the Qing government, the Qing government decided to rebuild the Northern Fleet. As part of the reconstruction plan, the Qing government ordered two steel-clad cruisers to the United Kingdom in 1896, named “Haitian” and “Haiti” (later renamed “Haitian”) respectively. In order to ensure the quality of the two ships, the Qing government dispatched Cheng Bi light special to the British Armstrong factory supervision.
