Jose Carreras barely got up and he was dizzy and had a good toothache. That was July 13, 1987, Carreras in Paris, the opera film “The Artist’s Life.” Perhaps prolonged use of antibiotics due to toothache made him feel so uncomfortable and tired; perhaps due to his intense work schedule. In the past four months, he has been running around France, Italy, Spain, Britain, the United States and other countries, pouring music around the clock, shooting movies, holding solo concerts and playing the role of opera. “I looked terrible,” Carreras mused over his haggard pale face in the mirror of the hotel suite he was staying in. He decided to stay in hospital for a thorough medical examination. Life was generous to Carreras, then 40. He was hailed as one of the world’s three most famous tenor singers in the early days of his career (with Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo). His handsome appearance and natural performance make him an actor favored by opera audiences, and his bold character is loved by conductor and performance host. From Vienna to Tokyo
