马克·吐温的中国观是发展变化的,其演变历经了三个阶段:早期对包括华人在内的有色人种的歧视和对华人充满异国情调的文化的好奇;19世纪六七十年代对遭受排挤的旅美华工的艰难处境的同情;后期给予反抗帝国主义的中国人人道主义声援。在这一转变过程中起决定作用的因素,除马克·吐温本人所具有的人道主义情怀之外,还在于美国驻华公使蒲安臣对华的外交策略对他的积极影响。
Mark Twain’s concept of China is evolving. Its evolution has gone through three stages: early discrimination against colored people, including Chinese, and curiosity about the exotic culture of Chinese people. In the 1960s and 1970s, Sympathy for the difficult situation of marginalized Chinese laborers in the United States; and the humanitarian support of the Chinese who opposed imperialism in the latter part of the world. In addition to the humanitarian feelings that Mark Twain himself had, the factors that played a decisive role in this process of change were the positive impact that his diplomatic tactics on the diplomatic efforts of China by Behinchen, the U.S. ambassador to China, had exerted on him.
