1972年HPM(International Study Group on the Relations between History and Pedagogy of Mathematics)的成立标志着一个独立学术研究领域的出现.至今HPM已经成为国际数学教育的新思潮之一,正如李文林教授所说“重视数学史在数学教育中的作用,当今已经是一种国际现象”.实现这种预期作用不能仅靠简单介绍数学史,而应该首先要将期望转化成要达到的有意义的具体目标,其次是针对目标精心规划资源开发和实施方式等.关于运用数学史的目标定位主要体现在各国数学课程标准中,而针对目标的规划最直接体现在各种数学教科书中.
