People are beginning to doubt the commonsense of the relationship between invention and the cost of investing in research and development. The preliminary analysis of the data from 35 U.S. vendors and 165 Japanese manufacturers does not appear to support the following assumptions: • The higher the invention rate (ie, the number of employees per capita), the higher the profit per employee and the higher sales ; • The greater the proportion of resources used for research and development, the higher the invention rate.
