The quadrant finder compares the amplitude of the receiving antenna (signal strength) in the amplitude direction finding system to obtain an angle to the target. The role of the antenna pattern is to enhance the sensitivity of the DF system to changes in the source relative to its angle. If an omnidirectional (isotropic) antenna is used, the maximum signal strength difference depends only on the baseline length. And at 2 GHz, at a distance of 2 km from the source, about a 500-m-long baseline would produce the largest change in signal strength by a few decibels.
