Ceramic matrix composites consisting of an alumina matrix containing 20 vol% nickel particles has been fabricated using hot pressing technique. It is found that fracture toughness of the composite is much higher than the alumina matrix. This is due to the energy dissipation of the nickel particles that bridge the propagating cracks.
