“,”Objective To observe the effects of treatment of primary hypertension with combination of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern medicine. Methods 60 outpatient with primary hypertension aged 37~79 were randomly divided into 2 equal groups: TCM treatment group treated by traditional Chinese medicine decoction combined with conventional Western medicine , and control group treated by conventional western medicine only. Four weeks later, blood pressure was measured and syndrome integral of vertigo was calculated. Results The systolic blood pressure 4 weeks after treatment of the combined treatment group was (135.69 ± 13.45) mmHg, significantly lower than that before treatment [(163.15±18.49) mmHg, P<0.05]. The systolic blood pressure 4 weeks after treatment of the Western medicine group was (137.53 ± 12.61) mmHg, significantly lower than that before treatment [(162.24 ± 16.349) mmHg, P<0.05]. The systolic blood pressure 4 weeks after treatment of the combined treatment group was lower than that of the Western medicine group , however, not significantly (P<0.05). The daily fluctuation of blood pressure between evening and morning in the combined treatment group was (10.23 ± 9.42) mmHg, significantly lower than that of the Western medicine group [(15.46 ± 12.24) mmHg, P<0.05]. The TCM syndrome integral of vertiligo 4 weeks after treatment of the Western medicine group was 11.92 ± 4.68, significantly lower than that before treatment [(25.06 ± 8.35),P<0.05]. The TCM syndrome integral of vertiligo 4 weeks after treatment of the combined tereatment group was 6.97±3.47, significantly lower than that of the same group before treatment [(23.43±7.29), P<0.05] and that of the Western medicine gropup after treatment as well (P<0.01). Conclusion Combined TCM and Western medicine treatment is more effective in treatment of primary hypertension.
