South African artist William Kentridge’s signature trick is stop-motion animation, but he has long been interested in the music scene. The first New York audience to see his directorial work was his extensive tour of The Magic Flute at the 2007 Broolyn Academy of Music. He enlarged the technique to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in 2010. The diverse collage of stages is in line with the absurd satire in Shostakovich’s The Nose. Returning to these two stages this fall, he shows two distinct works on how he maintains his standard visual style on the one hand, and on the other shows the musicality of different works.
