Masayuki Tanaka is a pioneer in environmental protection in East Asia. He stood at the forefront of active opposition to the footsteps of poisonous minerals. In his later years, he broke through the concept of geography and began to think more about Japan’s experiences of water-saving in mountain areas and its world significance. Takenaka’s idea of environmental protection played an important role in Japan’s post-World War II re-examination of pollution and its governance. His viewpoint of life, the harmonious development of man and nature occupy an important position in Japan’s history of environmental ideology. The ideas embodied in Tanaka’s environmental protection actions can provide historical reference for how we think about how to build an ecological civilization and how to ensure that people live and work in peace and contentment.
