Abrasiveflow machining (AFM) may be the most direct and flexible method of any finishing method. The process involves firmly holding the workpiece while pressing the abrasive media through or across the edges and surfaces being machined. Like all finishing methods, AFM has some advantages and disadvantages as well. Here are some advantages. (1) The process is selective and the area where the effect is generated is only where the mill flow is constrained. (2) It is controllable. Media type, fixture, flow and pressure can be changed to achieve specific results. Once the above factors are determined, the processing effect can be constant over several parts over several months.
