《剪灯新话》锻造了一批忠实的小说读者和拥护者,这只是小说在文学外的社会效应;而李昌祺锐意效颦、亦步亦趋的《剪灯余话》,才是《剪灯新话》在文学深层的革命和振动。《剪灯余话》的出现,甚而在明人之中出现了“瞿李之争”:“瞿宗吉与李昌祺所著《剪灯新话》、《余话》,瞿笔路固敏劲,然剽窃者多,甚至全篇累行誊录;李虽用事险僻,少涉晦涩,要之皆其胸臆中语,非窃之他人也。其诗集所谓《运甓漫稿》者,其中亦多佳句。《余话》中则‘惜花春早起’四词之外,吾无多取焉。《新话》中亦惟‘四时词’及二三‘竹枝词’耳。其它如《香台集》、《存斋诗话》之类,皆鄙俚语言无足为道。然则学术识见,瞿不逮李远甚。世竞优瞿
