The author is a professor of history of craft studies at Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States. This article is his speech at the annual meeting of the Society of Mechanical Engineers held in Chicago in the winter of 1980. Although the target is a U.S. engineer, the issues raised by him may sooner or later be faced by other engineers in industrialized countries. So translated to readers.
