On the issue of treating the old house, the attitude in the Mainland has shifted from the demolitions to the other extreme. It is all the old stuff that can be dismissed as soon as it is demolished or moved. This poses another danger, which, at the same time as protection, can stifle the possibility of something new emerging. There are many examples of spatial transformations in the world, such as the Ruhr industrial area in Germany, which transformed from a coal and steel manufacturing area into a cultural industry and a gathering area for museums. Now that Shanghai’s Xuhui Riverside is not just an industrial landscape, a West Bank Biennale has renovated the old buildings and allowed the new buildings to exist. At present, we can see that it is only a part of it. After it is completed, it will also have community functions and will be permanently retained in the West Bank of the Huangpu River in the future.
