平顶山煤田位于淮陽地盾北緣。煤田类型为地台边緣凹地型,地層系統基本上与華北各地相同,区內构造由兩向斜及一背斜所組成。总面積約330平方公里,含煤42層,震旦紀、寒武紀等古老地層在礦区南部,九里山、土牛山一带有其分布。煤系地層大部分为第四紀地层所掩盖,出露稀少。礦区北部有二迭紀平頂山砂岩及三迭紀石千峯統紅砂岩露出,構成高山,拔海400—500余公尺.地形陡峻、南沿山坡,切割溝谷甚多,具有泉水及季節性地表水流.
Pingdingshan coalfield is located in the northern edge of Huaiyang shield. The type of coalfield is the concave type on the edge of the platform, and the formation system is basically the same as that in North China.
