Baudrillard’s theory of consumer society holds that in the consumer society, people are no longer using the value of goods, but symbolic meaning; the pursuit of consumption leads to the loss of rationality, the interpersonal relationship becomes indifferent and the human mind is affected Alienation of goods. George Eliot, in her work “Adam Bide,” shaped the image of two alienated consumers, Arthur and Heidi, to reflect her fears about a consumer culture. At the same time, she established the moral model represented by Adam and Dinah, thus infiltrating her moral prescriptions for the cure of consumer cultural diseases in her novels. Specifically, her moral prescriptions include: respect for traditional values, thoughts of “karma”, “altruism”, and “sympathy consciousness”.
