为了解释大豆种子对水分的吸收能力不同这一现象,作者使用扫描电镜对8个PI系列品种的种子和少量PI404—168(软粒型)×416-954(硬粒型)F_2代种子的种皮进行了观察,发现了种皮内外表面上的皮孔和蜡粉沉积。经过木醇处理的F_2代种子中的硬粒种于,其种皮上可见到类似蜡粉的沉积物,这些沉积物有的非常稳定,有的则容易受外界因素的影响而产生变化。作者用另外7个种子软硬程度各不相同的PI系列品种各取样5份,分别浸种0、1、5、10和24小时,分别催芽育苗后计算其发芽率,称量苗龄7天的幼苗重量,结果说明种子越软越怕浸。在水浸地上,大豆种子发芽率偏低、幼苗活力减弱就是出于这个原因。
