截止到１９９９年，山东各地先后有１３处远古文化遗址出土过５３个刻画符号，其数量在全国虽不算多，但价值意义却最为重要。从北京文化、大汶口文化到龙山文化、岳石文化再到商代文化，从几何形符号到图画文字再到甲骨文，这是汉字起源、形成的几个关键点，而能够确立这几个关键点的，只有山东一地。
