Most of the existing researches on collocation focus on analyzing mismatch errors that language learners are prone to and how to help learners expand their collocations with language knowledge while ignoring their role in language comprehension / processing. In fact, collocation-to-sentence processing may have a contextual effect / start-up effect, which has a particularly strong impact on English test results involving sentence processing. The article takes a sentence completion SAT as an example to estimate the relative strength of the correct answer and the two interference items, respectively, and to further explore the possible influence of the design with the answers that usually appear in the correct answers on the test results. How this effect varies from person to person. If some candidates can only guess the correct answer based on the relative strength of the match, and the test questions aim to measure other knowledge and skills, the validity of the inference based on the test result and the fairness of the test are debatable.
