CNC laser systems that can be cut, drilled and welded have been successfully developed by the Raytheon Laser Center in the United States. PW-561 solid-state laser system can process 18 inches long, weighing 100 pounds of metal body. There are many advantages to using laser to machine metal over other processing methods such as high precision, no thermal damage, no tool wear, low fixture cost, no workpiece contact during machining, fast speed, and reliable handling. The system includes quick programming and simplified numerical control software (computer numerical control system motion accuracy of up to 0.0001 inches) and through the laser condenser display closed-circuit television. PW-561 lasers can spot weld or seam weld a wide range of metals and difficult-to-weld metals such as copper, aluminum, tungsten and molybdenum with penetration rates up to 0.08 inches. It is also possible to drill holes with a diameter of 0.002 to 0.02 inches and a depth of 0.5 inches. With rotation
