In 2016, the global economy remained weak and continued its pattern of differentiation over the years. According to preliminary estimates, the economic growth rate for the whole year was only 2.5%, hitting a new low in five years; the growth rate of international trade was less than 2%, and it also set the lowest growth rate since 2010. Some economies even showed a downward trend. Foreign direct investment dropped sharply by 12.5%, and it mainly relied on mergers and acquisitions, which had little effect on the growth of the real economy. The central banks of advanced economies such as Europe and Japan further promoted negative interest rate policies and maintained quantitative easing measures despite maintaining their policy interest rates.
