《韩非子》与《君主论》有许多共同之处,如注重历史经验、相信历史变化、拥护君主集权、坚持实用原则等等,更为重要的是非道德倾向,比如它们都强调“德”的重要,这个“德”不是宽爱的品德,而是孔武的强力,它与悲观主义的人性论有关。但是在此基础上的发展过程中,两书的思想又表现了一定的差异。对此,过去较少论及。对于人性和人类之爱,(君主论》在否定的同时,又有一定保留,表现了作者的矛盾心态;而《韩非子》却坚持了一贯的否定态度。在君主集权的方式上,前者强调直接统治的必要,因此要求君主具备在接的政治技巧;而后者却只注重抓治理官吏的纲,反对过问具体的统治细目。这与它们各自的历史和文化背景有着必然的联系。
