According to a report by the New Scientist, Japan’s MITI recently proposed a new idea of economic promotion that invests in electronic infrastructure to promote the economy more than the traditional investment in large-scale construction projects. According to its research, a 10% increase in engineering units that typically benefit from public investment in roads and bridges can only lead to 5.6% growth in manufacturing as a whole, while a 10% increase in consumer electronics companies could boost manufacturing growth by 23.1%. In order to promote the development of the consumer electronics industry, MITI proposed that the government should invest in building a fiber-optic network to replace the telephone line. It believes that as long as there is an updated infrastructure, consumers will buy more advanced electronic devices to take advantage of it.
