Recently, Carlson et al. Proposed that prostaglandin E (hereinafter referred to as PGE) has the effect of causing migraine attacks, thus providing a new clue to the mechanism of migraine attacks. Some researchers have confirmed that PGE has a strong expansion of cerebral blood vessels. Recently, Welch confirmed that PGE has a specific vasodilator effect on the external carotid artery, which increases blood flow to the blood vessel; thus, blood flow to the internal carotid artery is reduced by a “leak” mechanism. These authors hypothesize that migraine is caused by the local release of prostaglandins at the external carotid artery. Prostaglandins are released through neuro- or biochemical stimuli and their neurotransmitters may include serotonin.
