In India, especially in some tribes and poor areas, farmers rely on forest resources to meet their needs for energy, forest products and employment. This article details the extent to which farmers depend on forests in India’s Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Gujarat. Based on the percentage of revenue from forests as a percentage of total household income, villagers in the region are dependent on forests for between 37% and 76%. Through such assessment, a corresponding database can be set up, on the basis of which a corresponding indicator system can be set up to guide the sustainable management of forests and enhance the understanding of the complexity of forest management. This information helps to properly assess the contribution of the forestry sector to the overall national economy and can help planners, managers and foresters to take better management measures.
