This paper reports the results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy of Schistosoma japonicum eggshell ultrastructure. The egg shell is made up of a thin inner layer of very dense electron density and a thick medium electron dense outer layer of uniformity. The eggshell surface is covered with an average of 0.06 × 0.02 μm micro spines and an average of 0.18 × 0.06 μm micro spike projections. The number of micro spikes per square micron egg shell surface is about 600. The physiological role of the spines and the spines of the egg shell and their significance in the pathogenesis are discussed.
