在以男权为中心的封建社会里,女性的地位极其低下,社会上充满了对女性的歧视,美女也不例外。既然是以男性为主导的社会,那么人们对于美女的评价往往从男性的立场出发,因此评价标准也不尽相同,于是就出现了许多不同的审美观念。拥有沉鱼落雁之容,闭月羞花之貌被人们视为美女已得到普遍认可。但是面貌丑陋并不一定就被人们视为丑女,心灵美有时还能弥补体貌上的缺失,使人们认为她仍然很美。其实,在大多数诗人笔下,心灵美与体貌美常常并重,他俩互相依存,相得益彰,融化为一体,构成诗人们理想女性的最高标准。按照常理来说,美女拥有一般人所没有的美貌,这是她们可以为之骄傲的资本,她们的生活应该是很幸福的。可是事实上却不是这样,对于统治阶级来说,美女是他们利用的工具,他们通过美女来谋取自身的政治和经济利益,以达到其他的手段所不能达到的目的,他们毫无怜悯之心,完全扼杀了她们选择自由和婚姻的权力,是对她们的摧残,美女的命运是很悲惨的。
