中国佛教及旅游胜地五台山位于山西省东北部,忻州市五台县和繁峙县之间,西南距省会太原市230公里。与四川峨嵋山、安徽九华山、浙江普陀山共称“中国佛教四大名山”。与尼泊尔蓝毗尼花园、印度鹿野苑、菩提伽耶、拘尸那迦并称为世界五大佛教圣地,或者世界五大佛教名山。1982年11月国务院首批公布五台山为“国家重点风景名胜区”。1992年林业部批准为“国家森林公园”。2007年5月国家旅游局审定为“首批国家AAAAA级旅游景区”。2009年6月26日在西班牙塞维利亚举行的第33届世界遗产大会上被正式列入《世界遗产名录》。可以说,旅游业最高的荣誉称谓——或官方或民间——全被它占了。
