一、情态动词的基本用法
1.can/could
(1)表示“能力”。
He can play table tennis quite well. 他乒乓球打的很好。
(2)表示理论上的“可能性”。
Even an experienced teacher can make mistakes. 即便是非常有经验的老师也可能会犯错。
(3)表示“请求和允许”。
You can have my seat. I’m going now. 你可以坐到我这里,我马上走。
(4)表示“惊奇、怀疑、不相信”。
Can what he said just now be true? 他刚才说的是真的吗?
注意 表示经过努力而成功地做成某件具体事情时,一般用be able to do而不用can或could。
2.may/might
(1)表示“允许;许可”,might语气更委婉。
She asked if she might open the window. 她询问是否可以开窗。
(2)表示“或许;可能”,might语气更加不肯定。
Her appearance has changed so much that you may well not recognize her. 她的样貌变了很多,你可能会认不出她来了。
(3)may用于祈使句中表示祝愿。
May you return in safe. 祝你平安归来。
注意 may的常用固定搭配有may well + 动词原形表示“很可能”;may as well + 动词原形表示“最好,不妨,倒不如”。
3.must
(1)表示“必须”。
We must do everything step by step. 我们做什么事都必须一步一步来。
(2)表示有把握的推测,译为“一定、肯定”。
She must be watching TV now. 她肯定在看电视。
注意 ①must开头的问句,其否定回答用needn’t或don’t have to。
②must常表示“主观必须”,而have to 则表示“客观需要”。
4.shall
(1)用于第一、三人称,表示征求对方的意见。
Shall we put off the sports meeting until next week? 我们能否把运动会推迟至下周?
(2)用于第二、三人称的陈述句,表示说话人给对方的命令、警告、允许或威胁等。
It has been announced that candidates shall remain in their seats until all the papers have been collected. 申请者被要求必须留在座位上,直到所有的试卷都收齐了。
5.should
(1)表示劝告和建议,作“应该”讲。
You should do it because you have promised to.你应该做,因为你答应了的。
(2)表示推测之意,译为“应该”。
It should be a good view-its reviews were very good. 这应该是个好想法,它反响很不错。
(3)表示意外惊异惋惜等语气,译为“竟然”。
It’s a pity that she should have failed in the entrance examination. 她竟然没有通过考试。
(4)用在if条件句中表示可能性很小,译为“万一”。
If anyone should phone, tell him I’m in conference. 如果有人打电话来就说我正在开会。
(5)用于各种虚拟语气中。
It’s ordered that we should get everything ready. 我们必须将一切准备好。
6.will / would
(1)表示“意愿”或“愿意”。
He will give his girlfriend anything she wants. 他愿意给他女友任何她想要的东西。
(2)表示“请求、建议”,用would 比 will 更委婉。
Would you like to come to my party? 你愿意来参加我的派对吗?
(3)表示习惯性,译为“总是”。
She would listen to music, alone in her room, for hours. 她总是一个人在屋里听好几个小时音乐。
7.need / dare
(1)need 和dare作情态动词,主要用于否定句和疑问句,need表示“必要,需要”,dare表示“敢于”。
―Need I come? 我需要来吗?
―Yes. You must. / No. You needn’t. 是的,你必须来。/不,你不需要来。
How dare you ask me such a question? 你怎么敢问我这样的问题?
(2)need和dare作实义动词有人称、时态的变化。
George needed a pair of shoes. 乔治需要一双鞋。
They didn’t need to arrive so early. 他们不需要来这么早。
They don’t dare (to) show their faces. 他们不敢露脸。
注意 need和dare作情态动词时,直接加动词原形,其中dare作情态动词用时,存在过去式dared,但need作情态动词无过去时态。
二、情态动词+have done的用法
1. 表示对过去的推测
(1)must have done表示对过去已经发生的行为进行推测,意为“想必/准是/一定做了某事”。
You must have gone to bed late last night. 你昨晚肯定睡得很晚。
(2)can / could have done表示对过去已发生的行为的怀疑和不肯定,意为“不可能做了某事”。
He cannot have forgotten it. 他不可能忘记那件事。
(3)may / might have done表示对过去已发生的行为的推测,意为“也许/或许做过某事”。
It’s too late. I think he may have gone to bed. 太晚了,我想他也许已经睡了。
2. 表示后悔、责备或者遗憾
(1)could have done表示过去本来可以做/能够做……但实际上没做”,用于肯定句。
The accident could have been avoided. 这场事故本可以避免的。
(2)might have done表示本来应该或可以做某事,含有轻微的责备语气,用于肯定句。
You might have given him more help, though you were busy. 虽然你很忙,但你还是应该多帮帮他。
(3)should/ought to have done表示本应该做某事而实际上未做,用于肯定句和否定句。
You are late. You ought to have arrived five minutes earlier. 你迟到了,你应该提前5分钟到的。
(4)needn’t have done表示本来不必做某事,但实际上做了,用于否定句。
I actually needn’t have bought so much wine-only three people came. 实际上,我不应该买这么多酒,只有三个人来了。

二、情态动词+have done的用法
