五四运动是一个爱国运动,又是一个新文化运动。作为爱国运动来说,从1919年5月4日的运动爆发,到6月28日巴黎和约的拒绝签字,是可以自成一段落了(当然还没有结束,到1920年,还有它的延续和发展)。但作为文化运动来说,时间则比较长,可以从1915年9月《新青年》的创办一直讲到1921年中国共产党的成立。新文化运动可以分为两个阶段,“五四”以前主要讲启蒙运动,“五四”以后主要讲马克思主义在中国的传播。马克思主义在中国的传播,线索比较清楚,重点比较容易掌握,而启蒙运动包括的内容则比较多,头绪比较乱,重点不易掌握。不少中学老师来信问,这一段应该主要讲些什么?使学生从中受到哪些方面的教育?
The May 4th Movement was a patriotic movement and a new cultural movement.
