按多重地层划分原则厘定上湖组的底界,上湖组下部的坪岭段厚89~140m,富产龟鳖类、鳄类、蜥蜴类、恐龙、恐龙蛋、哺乳类等脊椎动物化石。恐龙化石见于坪岭槽探剖面、高田村、南雄新城区、枫门坳西南等4个地点的坪岭段下部,计有Tyranosaurus sp.,Tarbosaurus sp.,Microhadrosaurus nanshiungensis等;恐龙蛋见于鹅颈岭、武台岗、南雄新城区、枫门坳、南雄烟厂采石厂等5个地点的坪岭段下部及枫门坳龟山附近坪岭段的中上部;阶齿兽等哺乳类化石见于修仁、枫门坳、武台岗、坪岭槽探剖面、鹅颈岭等5个剖面上,在坪岭槽探剖面坪岭段下部开始出现,中上部逐渐增多,至下惠段开始大量出现。坪岭段既有白垩纪常见的恐龙及恐龙蛋化石,也有被认为属古新统标准化石的阶齿兽动物群,且两者混生互为消长,前者富集于坪岭段下部,中上部仅见于个别地点;后者在坪岭段自下而上逐渐增多。坪岭段的脊椎动物化石与无脊椎动物(腹足类、双壳类)、微体化石(介形类、轮藻、腹足类口盖)一致,都具有中、新生代或白垩纪-古近纪混生过渡性质,并与下伏南雄群的关系更密切、古老色彩浓厚、继承性明显,生物群的总貌反映坪岭段的时代应属晚白垩世最晚期而非古新世。
