【Abstract】Understanding the implied meanings of proverbs exactly is very significant in inter-cultural communication,for it determines whether the communication is successful or not.However,it is very difficult for people with different cultural backgrounds to master the very meaning of the proverbs.In this passage,I will focus on the inter-cultural communication between the English and the Chinese.I will analyze what contributes to the differences in inter-cultural communication and how to use proverbs exactly in the particular situation so that we can have a successful inter-cultural communication.

Ⅰ.Introduction
A proverb is a brief popular saying that gives advice about how people should live or that expresses a belief that is generally thought to be true.On the one hand,English proverbs are the essence of its language and culture.They show how English people think and what their lifestyles are.On the other hand most of Chinese proverbs stem from Chinese idioms,classical allusions and two-part allegorical sayings,which are strange to the foreigners that it is impossible for them to understand the implied meanings behind these proverbs.
In all,it is the culture differences that contribute to the misunderstanding of the proverbs.So what is culture?According to Goodenough,a society’s culture consists of whatever it is one has to know or believe in order to operate in a manner acceptable to its members,and to do so in any role that they accept for any one of themselves.With different ecological environment,different nationalities create their own cultures.At the same time,they are also modeled by their own culture.That’s the very reason why there exists culture differences.
Ⅱ.Factors lead to the differences
A.Geographical environment
England is an island country on the Atlantic,while China is in East Asia.Different geographic locations result in different climate.So,it’s very difficult for people to understand the proverbs concerned about the climate.
(1)It is a warm wind,the west wind full of bird’s cries.(春風送暖,百鸟欢唱。)
(2)东风压倒西风:The East Wind prevails over the West Wind.
In England,west wind represents warmness.However,in Chinese,it is just opposite that west wind is the symbol of coldness.
Besides,different geographical location also result in different resources.In ancient ages,Chinese people mainly lived in the inland.Thus,they aspire to the ocean.
