Introduction
Translation criticism is done by causing people to evaluate the translation, and led people to appreciate and pay attention to the translation and can enjoy the masterpiece, correct the rough translation. It has an important guiding significance to the translation practice and the appreciation of the translation art, and has made an indelible contribution to the development of the translation. Therefore, there are always some personal opinions about the criteria, methods, tasks and the qualities of the critics, and it is difficult to describe the standard of objectivity. This paper rethinks these questions to illustrate my understanding of translation criticism.
1. The Definition of Translation Criticism
As a central topic in translation studies, translation criticism is an important component of translation theory. Translation theorists define translation criticism from different perspectives.
The American scholar Peter Newmark argues: “translation criticism is a fundamental link between translation theory and practice”(1988:184). He emphasizes the bridge role of translation criticism in translation theory and practice.
Xu Jun believes that “translation criticism is the rational reflection and evaluation of translation activities, not only including the specific evaluation of translation and translation of the text, but also including the analysis of the general nature of translation, processes, techniques, methods, effect, influence.
2. The Importance of Translation Criticism
Since the reform and opening to the outside world, great progress has been made in translation in our country. However, when we affirm our achievements, we should also see that there are still many problems in our translation work, and there has been a serious problem of translation quality. Such as: lack of understanding of the cause of translation, quick success of the original little knowledge. 3. The Subjectivity of Translation Criticism
The core of translation criticism is “criticism”, which is an activity of cognition and an evaluation of the translator’s translation. Different critics own knowledge conservation; knowledge is different from the same problem even from the same point of view, the understanding will be different, critics will be deeply affected by their own experience, the same translation of the reaction.
4. The Practicality of Translation Criticism
The research object of translation criticism is translation works, and translation works are the direct product of translation practice.
Translation criticism is the translation of the works to do further understanding and evaluation.
To sum up, the evaluation criteria and basic tasks of translation criticism cannot be separated from translation practice. The development of translation criticism is of great significance to the smooth progress of translation practice.
5. The Discourse Turn of Translation Criticism
The discourse turn of translation criticism means that the standard of translation criticism should be centered on the reader’s response. Translation criticism is centered on translation. The basic goal is to promote the smooth progress of translation theory practice. Therefore, translation criticism should also be based on the reader’s response as the most basic evaluation criteria.
Conclusion
Translation criticism is a scientific evaluation of specific translation phenomena based on certain criteria. A good translation, a good translation criticism, must be centered on the reader’s response. Therefore, it is imperative to turn the discourse of translation criticism into the reader’s response.
